A hare in the centre of Nuremberg by Masha Zavlianova

The Hare

When I first arrived in Nuremberg (Germany) I was surprised to see the monument to a hare in the very centre of the old city. Then I was told that a very famous German painter Albrecht Durer lived in this city. His favourite animals were hares. He liked to watch them in the wild nature and even took home a sick hare to take care of it. At that time the painter himself was very sick. They both soon recovered.

That is why this outstanding artist painted a very famous picture The Young Hare. The citizens of Nurnberg loved this picture greatly and it was natural to see the picture of the hare near almost every house.

In 1984 the sculptor Juergen Goertz erected the monument to the hare. This monument is situated near the house of Durer and it seems that one eye of the hare looks at Durer’s house.

We can see that the hare with the little ones crawled out of a case and finds itself in a heap of metal litter. The hare seems lonely in the place where there is no more nature at all. It is obvious that if a man doesn’t take care of the environment, there will be space for neither animals nor people. And it won’t be possible to see any hare in the wild. That’s why, I think, the sculptor placed a figure of a small hare near the big one to show that we have little time to save our planet.

This hare can help to preserve the nature.
