Notre Dame de la Garde by Daniel Pittet
Notre-Dame de la Garde was built in 1864 in Marseilles. It is situated at the highest natural point in Marseille, a 162 m on the south side of the Old Port.
It was built by architect Henri Jacques Esperandieuin the Neo-Byzantine style. Inside the church is decorated with sumptuous religion mosaics , columns and marble pilasters . Some places in the church are decorated with anchor motifs, images of ships. They reflect the long maritime history of Marseilles.
A monumental tall statue of the Madonna and child, covered with gold leaf , you can see from all the sides of Old Port. It shines at the sun by day and lighted by night.
In Marseilles, Notre-Dame de la Garde is traditionally regarded by the population as the guardian and the protectress of the city.
I like this monument of my city. I visit it often because the panoramic view of the city is splendid from there.
