The Pyramids of Giza by Ricardo Sanchez

During the early period of Egyptian history, after the re-unification of the lower and upper Egypt, rich people lived in mastabas which wer rectangular and had a flat roof. These pyramids evolved into pyramids , such as the pyramids of Egypt.

There are several monuments in the Giza Necropolis: the pyramids of KHUFU, KHAFRE, QUEENS, the GREAT SPHINX and several temples.

The pyramids of Giza were built during the 4th Dynasty. Archaeologists believe that Hemiunu or Haman (which can be translated as master of works) were the architects of the pyramids.

The construction of the pyramid involved 400 000 men and lasted 20 years.

Most theories are based on the idea that the stone blocks were moved from a quarry and dragged and lifted into place.

A more recent theory suggests that the blocks were made on the spots of construction from a kind of limestone concrete.

The shape of the pyramids is thought to represent the descending rays of the sun. The surface of the pyramids are highly reflective and archaeologists believe that at one time the tips of the pyramids were covered in gold (representing the sun).

The shape of the pyramids comes from Ben-Ben - the mound on which Egyptians believe the creator god ATUM settled.
